Guard & Reserve Retirement Pay: Points, Pay Base and Start Age

Retirement planning guide • Updated October 2, 2026

A Guard or Reserve retirement estimate needs two different service measures: qualifying years for eligibility and retirement points for the pension calculation. They are not interchangeable.

Qualifying years and points answer different questions

A standard non-regular retirement generally requires 20 qualifying years. Retirement points help determine equivalent service for the pay multiplier. Your official point statement and retirement eligibility records are the starting point; the app does not validate those records.

Equivalent years for pay = retirement points ÷ 360

Then apply the retirement-plan multiplier to the pay base. For example, a legacy High-36 estimate uses equivalent years × 2.5%; BRS uses equivalent years × 2.0%.

A points-based example

Suppose your verified record shows 3,600 points and 20 qualifying years. The points equal 10 years for this multiplier calculation. With an illustrative $5,000 monthly pay base, a High-36 estimate is $5,000 × 10 × 2.5% = $1,250 gross monthly retired pay.

Those 10 equivalent years do not replace the 20 qualifying years required for standard eligibility. This example also does not establish the date benefits begin.

Pay start age matters

Non-regular retired pay commonly begins at age 60. Certain qualifying service may permit an earlier start. Have your service verify the applicable date instead of assuming all active service lowers the age.

Retirement Ready lets you enter a verified retired-pay start age. Before that age, the regular non-disability military-pay portion shows zero current pay and a separate future retired-pay estimate. It does not automatically determine reduced-age eligibility.

Understand the future estimate

The app uses the pay base you enter. It does not predict future basic-pay tables or COLA increases. Treat a future estimate as a scenario in today’s entered dollars, then update it when you have more accurate official figures.

Medical retirement and some individual Reserve cases need different treatment. A service retirement counselor can clarify which rules apply to your situation.

Prepare your inputs

Continue with BRS vs. High-36 or VA compensation and retirement pay.
