High-36 Military Retirement Calculator: How High-3 Pay Works

Retirement planning guide • Updated October 2, 2026

High-36, also called High-3, starts with your highest 36 months of monthly basic pay. Combine that average with creditable service and your retirement multiplier to estimate gross monthly retired pay.

The High-36 retirement formula

For a standard longevity retirement under the legacy High-36 plan, use:

Monthly pay base × creditable years × 2.5%

The pay base is basic pay, rather than take-home pay. Housing and subsistence allowances do not belong in that average. Use your actual pay history; entering today’s basic pay alone can overstate an estimate if your pay changed during the 36-month period.

A worked example at 20 years

If your High-36 average is $5,000 a month and you have 20 creditable years, the multiplier is 50%. The estimate is $5,000 × 20 × 2.5% = $2,500 in gross monthly retired pay, or $30,000 a year before taxes, benefit offsets or deductions.

This is an illustrative pay base, not a rank-based prediction. DFAS rounds gross retired pay down to whole dollars. Partial years can change the result; do not round your service up to a full year.

What to gather before calculating

Retirement Ready includes a High-36 helper that weights pay amounts by the number of months at each amount. The entries must cover exactly 36 months.

Why the deposit can differ from the estimate

Gross retired pay is only the starting point. A VA waiver, concurrent-pay eligibility, SBP premiums and other deductions can change military pay received. The app shows a before-tax breakdown rather than predicting an after-tax bank deposit.

Final Pay, REDUX, BRS, medical retirement and Guard/Reserve retirement have differences. Select the plan that applies to your service rather than treating every retirement as a 50% pension at 20 years.
